bullet Topic: Looking for romantic comedies-suggestions?
    Posted: 7/30/07 at 9:48am
Hi gang,

Looking for a very funny romantic comedy where boy and girl end up together in the end and everyone's happy.  But getting there should be downright hilarious....

On the list already are

Bernard Slade's Romantic Comedy (duh)

Bob Randall's 6 Rms Riv Vu

Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park

any other suggestions?

Not my favorite play, but Craig Lucas' Prelude to a Kiss comes to mind.

The Spectator Sport
If you can handle PG-13.
Okay maybe PG-15.

"I Hate Hamlet" if you have a strong older male to play the Barrymore role.
"Moon over Buffalo", "Lend Me a Tenor", all very funny.

Hmmm....perhaps I am not beign clear enough - to me BUFFALO and TENOR are farce, and although both very, very funny do not classify themselves as romantic comedies.

I'm looking for a play equivalent of something like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY or SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE - a chick flick for the stage, if you will.

Anybody got one of those?

Thanks!

The first play I ever directed was "Funny Valentines" by D.R. Andersen. It's a romantic comedy with parts for 2m and 2w 20-45 and one older woman to play the mother with the one-liners. It's very funny, everyone is in love at the end and the last bit it just schmaltzy enough that you could easily imagine Meg Ryan doing it.
"If nothing else, there's applause... like waves of love pouring over the footlights."

Well, bernster, Tenor and Buffalo are very funny, romance figures in throughout the play, and the boy and girl (and man and woman) end up together at the end!  I didn't see the rule about no farces!

Of course there is the classic "Same Time Next Year"

But I do agree with Red Diva, even farces have romantic and happy endings.  And these two shows end with the happy sloppy kiss that romantic comedies offer.
The two greatest days in a theater persons life, the day you start a new show and the day the damn thing closes.

Well, diva, next time please contact me for the rulebook on responding before you think about sending a message.  :)

And for some people, yes, tenor and buffalo would work as romantic comedies, but just not for me.

Same Time next year is an excellent example in my "rulebook."  This is what I am looking for more examples of....will also check out Funny Valentines.  Thank you.
