Hi gang,

Looking for a very funny romantic comedy where boy and girl end up together in the end and everyone's happy.  But getting there should be downright hilarious....

On the list already are

Bernard Slade's Romantic Comedy (duh)

Bob Randall's 6 Rms Riv Vu

Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park

any other suggestions?

Not my favorite play, but Craig Lucas' Prelude to a Kiss comes to mind.

"I Hate Hamlet" if you have a strong older male to play the Barrymore role.
"Moon over Buffalo", "Lend Me a Tenor", all very funny.

Hmmm....perhaps I am not beign clear enough - to me BUFFALO and TENOR are farce, and although both very, very funny do not classify themselves as romantic comedies.

I'm looking for a play equivalent of something like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY or SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE - a chick flick for the stage, if you will.

Anybody got one of those?

Thanks!

The first play I ever directed was "Funny Valentines" by D.R. Andersen. It's a romantic comedy with parts for 2m and 2w 20-45 and one older woman to play the mother with the one-liners. It's very funny, everyone is in love at the end and the last bit it just schmaltzy enough that you could easily imagine Meg Ryan doing it.

Well, bernster, Tenor and Buffalo are very funny, romance figures in throughout the play, and the boy and girl (and man and woman) end up together at the end!  I didn't see the rule about no farces!

Of course there is the classic "Same Time Next Year"

But I do agree with Red Diva, even farces have romantic and happy endings.  And these two shows end with the happy sloppy kiss that romantic comedies offer.

Well, diva, next time please contact me for the rulebook on responding before you think about sending a message.  :)

And for some people, yes, tenor and buffalo would work as romantic comedies, but just not for me.

Same Time next year is an excellent example in my "rulebook."  This is what I am looking for more examples of....will also check out Funny Valentines.  Thank you.

Have you thought about Norm Foster?Canada's best comedic playwright. He takes people and the way they communicate to a hilarious realistic level."The love list" is a favourite of mine.2 men are given the opportunity to create on paper, what they consider to be the perfect woman who only lives in the appartment.Of corse there is no "perfect" woman,so be careful what you wish for.

I have to agree with Red Diva & Biggertigger.
To me the only thing that differs with farce & comedy. [which at times  is spiolt by the sloppy romantic bit] Is that farce is comedy with it's pants down!Angry

Look at Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig. We ran it 4 weeks last year to a roaring sucess. It is very fast paced, with 3 romantic conflicts that resolve sweetly and it is knee walking funny.

Did you find your romantic comedy?  I have one, Sunday Dinner.  It has four characters and has had successful performances in Los Angeles.

John Loves Mary
This show (non-musical) was originally produced by Rogers & Hammerstein, ran for over a year on Broadway and was released as a movie starring Ronald Reagan.  The action takes place in the living room of the apartment of Senator James McKinley in the St. Regis Hotel in New York.  John's life was saved by Fred while overseas.  Fred returns to the States first, so John marries Fred's English girlfriend, Lily, to bring her to America for Fred.  John hopes to get a quick divorce from Lily and marry Mary, who doesn't know John is married already.  Things look hopeless, since Fred has already married someone else in the mean time..... until a surprise twist turns this into a happy ending proving love can be complicated and funny!

We produced this around the time of Valentines and sold the heck out of the show.

I second the vote on 'Prelude to a Kiss' -- wonderful!

'Wonderful Time', the British play (though the boy ends up with the boy)

Good luck! Jo

Don't know if you'd consider this a farce, but "The Importance of Being Earnest", Oscar Wilde, is a fun romantic comedy.....

Chapter Two by Neil Simon is a good lesser known romantic comedy.  It only has four cast members (two men and two women)...but with the right casting can be a great show.
