I'm putting together the material for my Introduction to Theatre class (college level) and I was hoping that someone could point me in the direction of a good book, article, or film that discusses what art is and why humans are driven to create it.

I want to start off the semester discussing these topics and why theatre is so important, but I need to find a jumping off point. I'm having a hard time finding material that focuses more on theatre and the performing arts rather than the visual arts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Personally, I've never really felt that theater per se is necessary to the human psyche, rather that some form of self-expression is important, particularly in socially organized groups. In which case, the arguments that apply to art in general probably apply. A general group discussion of the need for self-expression as it applies to theater and the performing arts may be beneficial.

Of course, my argument is compromised by that fact that I never bothered to think of theater in the broad sense, except as a way for people with common interests to get together and have fun. :)

Anyway, I hope I've been able to help in some small way.

Try McGraw-Hill online services. They have a theatre section with several intro to theatre textbooks
