I am looking to do SOUND OF MUSIC, but need to have a unit set, or very minimal set because of space issues. I don't have much option to change out sets.

Can SOUND OF MUSIC be done with a Unit Set? What are your thoughts?

If not, what musical can be?
THANKS :)

Yes, they just did this in a local production. They had a staircase with upper level platform and they flew in two different windows to represent three different locales: the abbey, the mansion and with no-window for the contest (instead of windows Nazi flags could have been flown in).

The platform and the staircase were painted black. It was a simple elegant concept. At one point they had a table and two chairs, another they brought in the mother superior's desk and in the mansion I think they had a large vase of flowers.

You could also do this set with a variety of large posters/ postcards of the time and similar minimal set pieces including a desk, table & chairs.

Or you could do projections on a few strategically placed screens. The key is to suggest easily where a scene takes place. Ex: Project a Nazi flag for the contest. Project the chapel interior for the Abbey. Project a Austrian Flag for the mansion. Project a mountain for the exterior.

I did TSOM on our small stage with NO wing space. We built 3 sided flats for the main scenes and covered one side with black fabric for the abbey. The bed folded down off the wall for the bed room. Here is a link to making them: http://www.communitytheater.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3881 %20 -

A local group did The Sound of Music with a unit set that was very effective. The entire upstage area, left to right, was a platform about 4 ft deep and three steps up, and two Gothic arches - one left and one right. Downstage left, and also downstage right were other platforms, each one step up that operated as the Mother Abbess's office, the bedroom (using a portion of the upstage platform as the bed), the terrace of the house, etc. The wedding processional was done right to left on the upstage platform, which was also used as the mountain top in the opening scene, and the same steps up to the platform used as the staircase for the "So Long, Farewell" number. What really helped them carry it off was a cyclorama on which they projected different scenes - even the Nazi flag was a projection. --- Hope this helps.
