I'm surfing the internet looking at seasons from other community theaters again.

What's everyone been doing and how has it been working out?

My wife and I have a vanity company, we've been doing a show a year at a local church we're friendly with, who likes to have something artistic swoop in now and then.

This year, we're doing Rabbit Hole.

So far this year we've done Why Torture Is Wrong - And the People Who Love Them (ran about 60% capacity - as a frame of reference, our break even point is approx 50%), All in the Timing (about 60 to 70%), and Out of Order (about 90%).

Currently doing Last of the Boys. Our Christmas show will be Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol - (back by popular demand). The February 2014 show will be The Mousetrap. The spring and fall shows are up in the air. And the 2014 Christmas show will be Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) - also back by popular demand.

Shows currently under consideration for the April and October 2014 spots are My Husband's Wild Desires and Long Day's Journey Into Night.

This is great.  I wonder if there is anything like this on a national scale.  I think I recall someone having compiled a list of the most performed plays in community theater over a certain time period in the U.S.

Anyone else remember that?  This was different than the most produced plays list that focuses mainly on professional productions.

I was actually thinking about posting about my list again.  This was the shows being performed by all of the community theatres I could find during 2005.  It is still available for anyone who would like a copy.

I am still hoping to get the time to update it.

Here are the top 10's from my original list.

1.  Annie
2.  Nunsense
3.  The Sound of Music
4.  Disney's Beauty and the Beast
5.  Grease
6.  I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change
7.  A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
8.  Seussical, the Musical
9.  My Fair Lady
10.  Forever Plaid

Note in the musical Top 10 a couple of big names are not listed, Fiddler on the Roof and The Music Man among others are not there for this year.  I started looking at this in 2004, and from my brief exploration that year, Fiddler  would easily have been in the Top 10.  As most people who have been in community theatre for a while realize, the choice of shows is cyclical.  I have been surprised while looking at this information over the years that, for some reason, groups throughout the country tend to pick the same shows.  This is not just brand new shows being released, but classics from the past.

Here are the straight shows:

1.  Proof
2.  Steel Magnolias
3.  Aresnic and Old Lace
4.  A Christmas Story
5.  The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
6.  The Lion In Winter
7.  Noises Off!
8.  Over the River and Through the Woods
9.  Barefoot In the Park
10.  Charlotte's Web

Once again, if you would like a copy just shoot me an email.

For me, I've decided on Almost, Maine for the fall show.

For the spring, if everything works out, I'm going to try the musical Back to the 80s.

Then in May, we are going to do the Hebron High School May Mashup Variety Show - this is the first year for it, so I hope we have great acts and great attendance.

We did very well with Almost Maine.   I suggest getting the music that goes with it, it really makes the show.

Thank you for the suggestion about the music. I just ordered the scripts last night. I'm looking to expand the cast to 18 or 19. But, I'll for sure look into getting the music. Great suggestion.

Another thought along those lines--my wife directed this last year and we had a musician friend, a guitarist, write some original pieces to go with it. He stayed on the set the whole time, off to the side, and played between scenes. Audiences really loved it. So if you know someone like that...
