We are doing a show where we need to have a real sound of breaking glass. I don't want to use canned sound effect. I've heard of a spinning drum with a crank handle that had glass inside it to produce a realistic sound in a safe way.

Has anyone built one of these or have any suggestions on it's construction? Thanks for any pointers on this

A wooden box full of old silverware will produce a realistic glass break sound when dropped or shaken.

I'll try that first.  Sounds much, much more simple!  K.I.S.S.!  Thanks.
