Hello,

Would love any suggestions for comedies which would work well for a local group. I became involved in the group as a cast member of their most recent production, The Butler Did It. The audition pool was mostly 20 something women (I was an exception as I am middle aged) The group is quite small, with a core of about 6 board members who also direct and perform in the shows (2 women and 4 men). The group rents space from a church so the content needs to be appropriate for a conservative crowd. Also since the space is rented, the set needs to be taken down between performances and there are technical limitations with lighting. The lighting system doesn't really allow for more than blackouts (can't even fade). The audience is very up close to the stage as it is all on one level.

I was asked if I had any suggestions for shows for next season. I gave some suggestions but would love it if anyone else out there had others. The Butler Did It had a very successful box office, so it seems similar shows would probably also do well.

I would recommend taking a look at "Star-Spangled Girl" by Neil Simon. 2M, 1W comedy.

Any of the "Greater Tuna" comedies (each requires 2 men playing dozens of parts) would also work well.

"Proof" would work for a drama.

I totally agree with Ogreking.

You might also look at "The Complete Works of Shakespeare - Abridged".

In a holiday vein, there's "Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)".

Then there's:

"The Glass Menagerie"
"Enchanted April"
"Art"
"Working"
"Everything I Know, I Learned in Kindergarten"
"A Walk in the Woods"
"Visiting Mr. Green"

And there's always Shakespeare. Don't be afraid to try. I just recently saw a very good production of "Henry IV, Part I" with a cast of nine women, and just directed an abridged "Hamlet" with a cast of thirteen. Zero set, minimal costumes, and both very effective.
