Hello --

Wonder if anyone can help me understand. We are planning to produce a summer camp for kids.

I see lots of theater groups that list like 10 camps- each running a week long and they are all different. Such as Annie, 101 Dalmations, Seussical etc.

Well, my question is are these theaters actually paying for the rights to ALL of these shows and or how is it commonly done? I am told they do cuttings and do it like a revue. Does this mean they do not have to pay for rights because of it being a revue?

If anyone does camps, please share your experiences and knowledge!! Thank you in advance!!

Maggie

Yes, they are paying royalties.  These "kids' camp" versions are condensations (30 to 45 minutes long) with simplified songs, a slight narrative thread, and an opportunity for a bunch of moderately talented youngsters to show off in front of mom, dad, and the grandparents.  (Think of all of those 5 to 7 yr olds dressed up like dalmatians.)  The kids usually rehearse for a week, put on a show at the end of it, and get to keep the t-shirt. - These "Jr." versions are package productions handled by the same folks who handle the "grown-up" shows.

Most of them are paying royalties.  There are still places who try to sneak through or for some bizarre reason think they don't need to pay.

Cheers,
Jon
