I'm interested in hearing from community theatres about their experiences in producing "The Lion in Winter."  It is a show that I may direct in 2009 and I would like to know how the show has done in other areas.  My thoughts are to stage it in November.  Though it is set at Christmas, most local patrons seem to want the more festive holiday-themed shows in December.

Is it a show you recommend?  Thanks for any feedback.

You may direct TLIW in November of 2009?  Hmmm...  What's your secret?  LOL

P.S.  It has been my experience that unless you have a pretty loyal following (or you're the only game in town), this show will only bring in the "cultured" crowd.  The show (if done right) is great, but sadly, musicals and comedies are usually the big success stories (as far as the box office goes) at most community theatres, and probably moreso now with the tanking economy.  Best of luck!

Unless you have a very good and committed marketing plan for this show, do not expect it to sell well.

do NOT use it as a "Holiday" show - no appeal to families, even older families, not really a 'feel good' show, attracts an older audience only -

we had a night with only 17 people in the audience.....
very well, done, but the people that remember the Katherine Hepburn film are getting older too, and those are the people that come to see it.

There are so many more 'Christmas' shows to look at.
