I just stumbled across these forums, and I'm really eager to discuss community theatre! I've been a techie for about 5 years now (since sophomore year of high school), and now I'm taking my first acting class to get more experience in other parts of theatre.

However, right now I'm trying to find something a little more off-topic for my class. We have to present a scene with one partner, and I'm having a hard time finding something! I love dramas and have always wanted to play a femme fatale at some point, but my scene partner is refusing to back down on her love of comedies.

So... does anyone have a play to recommend that is:

1. A comedy [both of us love Neil Simon, for example]
2. Has good scenes with just two females interacting
3. Written sometime in the past century
4. Has female characters somewhere around college age [I'm 18, she's 20, and it's a requirement that the characters be somewhere near our age range].

Thank you so much in advance to anyone who has any ideas!

"The Mistake" (Heuer Publishing) www.hitplays.com
2 men (Flexible casting—see note below)
Running time: 20 minutes
Synopsis:
Finger-pointing, name-calling, and shocking revelation! Blame, guilt, and a verbal battle royale that has lasted for years, (all of their lives!), through childhood’s laughter and as an adult’s sad tears. "The Mistake" is a fast-paced character study of two friends revealed in a nostalgia-based argument of comic memories, charged bickering and banter, and an unexpected reversal. A madcap, modern, private conversation and a humorous biting look at best friends.
While "The Mistake" was originally written with two male characters in mind, it has been successfully produced with a mixed gender, male and female casting, as well as an all female cast. Please feel free to make line/word/and pronoun adaptations to suit your production. The casting is flexible. Have fun with it! Try it in drag for a comedic challenge as well!
Good luck in your search,
M.

Watermelon Boats by Wendy MacLaughlin.

It's 10 minute play that follows the friendship of Kat and Kitty from the ages of 10 to 21.  It's a brilliant piece, because it challenges the actors to portray the same characters as middle schoolers, then teenagers and then college students.  It's a touching play and has both funny and highley emotional moments.  It might be a good place for you and your partner to meet.

Messiah on the Frigidaire has a ton of scenes between two women. It's a comedy, but with some guts to satisfy your serious side. I saw it performed by a College Theatre Department, so the age thing works. It's published by Samuel French.

An obvious choice is "Odd Couple Female Version" by Neil Simon. Olive and Florence have a couple of very good scenes together.
