Not an anti-McCarthy play, but a play about the terrors and brutality suffered by those who lived under Communist regimes. Any ideas?

The play that comes immediately to mind is "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" by Tom Stoppard.  But I don't know if there is any way around the musical requirements.

If there is a play version of "One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovitch" it would also be a great choice.

There is also Cahoot's MacBeth by Stoppard.  It's short, and it's very funny, but it also has a lot of insight into the oppression of artists under Communism.  (It was inspired by Pavel Kohout, a Czech actor/director who was prevented from working and hounded by the Communist regime.  He got around this by creating a theatre company that performed in people's homes.)

Try Vaclav Havel - for someone who actually lived under the terrors of Communism.

Here's an anti-totalitarian play that might fit the bill.  Animal Farm -
