Hi,
This is my first time on the forum.
I have been tasked with building a platform for our school stage. What they want is to extend the front of the stage out like a catwalk, 4' to 5' out and 4' to 5' wide. From the stage to the floor it's about 3' (actual 39").
It will be used for a fashion show where models would walk out onto the platform, turn around and back. It could possibly also be used for some light dancing.
I'm thinking I could build a 4'x4' platform and put legs on it. My research on the topic shows that I should use a frame of 1x6's, topped with 3/4" ply. The legs would be 2x4 bolted to the frame or perhaps as an "L" compression leg. I would also add "X" cross bracing (1x6 or 1x4) on each side between the legs.
My question... Is the 3' height OK for legs like that? Will this thing be sturdy enough?

Your basic plan is sound and the height is not so drastic that you need worry about it, especially with the x-bracing. The one thing I would change; is to substitute 2x4's in place of the 1x's. You will find it much easier to assemble the platform using the 2x4's and it will be stronger as well. Good luck.

I agree with Quincy. I would build the 4x4 frame with 2x4s. Include a brace through the center (parallel to the sides). Screw the 2x4s together with 3" drywall screws, two for each junction. Cover the frame with 3/4" plywood, and screw the plywood down with 1 5/8" drywall screws. As you mentioned you are planning to do, use 2x4s for the legs, three screws per leg. You can also use 2 or 3 5/16" or 3/8" carriage bolts. lf you anticipate there being more than 2 people on the platform at any time, you can fit a second 2x4 against the leg that fits flush to the cross member of the frame above it. I usually cross brace such a platform with 1x4.
If the platform is built well, and all joints are tight, it will be incredibly sturdy.
I also think you will find using 2x4s cheaper than the 1x6.
