We are looking at improving and enlarging our producer program..currently a board member is assigned as producer to the upcoming/current/rehearsing show. But we don't have any specific guidelines, and I'm wondering what others do. Or, if there is a resource out there that could be helpful. Basically, we want the producer to be the liason between the director and the board. We don't want the producer to override decisions made by the director..any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Probably the best description I have heard was by Henry Winkler;-
"The producer orginises supply & setting up everything for the sand pit, directors direct where, when & how to place the sand in the pit, so the actors can play in it". [or words to that efect]

This is the "job description" for our Producer:

/////// Producer /////

·         The Director is responsible for the artistic portion of the production and the Producer is responsible for everything else including: rehearsal and performance space; publicity; programs; purchases; securing adequate creative staff; house management and staffing; back stage personnel.  He/she may do this directly or through supervision of others.

·         The Producer is the main liaison between the Board and the production.

  • The producer supports the production in any way needed and finds solutions to problems that occur along the way.
  • The Producer should have complete authority over the production of a single play. This is a more efficient method than having the entire Board serve this function. Other Board members can be associate producers and have various responsibilities, but there should be one Producer.

We don't use Producers in comeatre here, which maybe a throw back from the aude Pohmy [British]theatre?
We tend to rely upon the groups camels to do this function, which has the tendancy to become some what lally gagging.
Where by the producer was eventualy replaced by the director since the advent of the Flicks. However the position of the producer was took over by those of the purple circle camels & the Director came more into play.
Which is a pity as these days there is a need here to have producers reinstated as a production dromendary.
