Hi all. Long time reader, but first time poster here. I am looking for a good, well-known comedy for about 5-10 characters. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Jasper

"The Nerd" and "The Foreigner" are both laugh-out, crowd-pleasing comedies by Larry Shue.

Well, obviously (probably too obviously), there's always "The Odd Couple" and "Barefoot in the Park." -- You did say "well-known" so I assume you're looking for the largest audiences you can get.

You might also try "The Importance of Being Earnest" or "Charley's Aunt."  Titles people know but probably haven't really seen, so you have the recognition factor.  Plus they can be really, really funny when done well.

I also recommend a really great laugh-out-loud comedy that doesn't perhaps have a great recognition factor, but it does have a great title (and it truly lives up to expectations): "Love, Sex, and the IRS."  Great clean fun.  We had standing room only at our final performance. (Our performance dates were in April, so we had a timeliness factor going for us as well.)

Seconded; I'm directing The Foreigner early next year, and it's absolutely hilarious.

Maybe not as well known, but absolutely hilarious when done right is Marc Camoletti's DON'T DRESS FOR DINNER.  I see it playing quite a bit in community theatres these days.  We did this show several years ago and sold out every night.  Some people even came back for a second performance.

Ben Elton's 'Popcorn' is well worth a look and for an intelligent comedy dealing with the authorship of Shakespeare's plays (and poems) try Amy Freed's 'The Beard of Avon".
