I like The Butler Did it Again, a sequal, to the first one much better.  It does have an alligator in it but our prop person made a great head with a mouth that opened and just a place to put arms for the body.  It comes out of a doorway.

It was a popular show but is not a big name.  We dressed everyone in a dictinctive different color like Clue for one of our productions.  The ready-made characters make it an easy show for inexperienced actors.

We also made some of the men's parts into women's although that's not highly regarded on this site.   But it was do that or not do the show.

We've done it 2 or 3 times.

I did this show years ago, if it's the same one then my run was a huge success.  I'd love to do it again.

Well then don't do the GD SHOW!!!!!!!  It's not that it's not highly regarded, it's illegal.   But hell, who cares, don't bother asking how the  playwright or thier agent might feel about it.  They just own the intellectual property.   Hey would you like it if I borrowed your car and put racing stripes on it while it was in my possession.   I'm sure you'd love that.

Whoa, whoa, there.

First off, it MAY be a violation of the licensing -- not "illegal." What you can and cannot do under the licensing of a show varies from publisher to publisher, playwright to playwright, and even occasionally piece to piece.  Even moreso if you bother to ask permission.

Secondly, that's a hideously bad analogy.  The owners of the play rights don't have to change all their copies to whatever you did -- their original is untainted as ever.
