Has anyone ever watched/heard about this Cinderella story in a waaaay different setting?? You HAVE to watch it if you haven't yet! it's purely singing and the songs are TO DIE FOR! I would recommend this musical for ALL ages. I love how the music isn't the typical theater/broadway music.

This has been one of my favorites since I saw it in high school. Beautiful songs! I would love to do it at our theatre, but the lack of diversity in our community is a hinderance. But it is a great show. I'd say more of a take on The little mermaid than Cinderella (the original little mermaid story, not disney's version).

You don't need diversity!! I just directed this at my small college in MO and we had an entirely Caucasian cast- and it WORKED. I brought in an African dance expert to teach the choreography and it was amazing. The stoyr is about CLASS division- and there is alternate text the authors include. I urge you to do thsi show- I've directed over 30 musicals- and thsi was by far the best experience I've had- don't doubt yourself!

I saw the "alternate" version once, and I didn't care for it at all. However, the rest of the audience (who I assume were unfamiliar with the original) liked it just fine, so yes, it can work.

I've done this show with what the script calls a "multi-ethnic cast." The script even makes suggestions on how to change lines and song lyrics so that it will still work for a different cast. It changes the premise from the skin color issue in the musical to rich vs poor, but it still works - and still a beautiful musical. The end of Once on This Island still makes me cry. Its just tragic and beautiful.
