I am a 21 year old woman who, although an experienced actor, has never had any singing lessons. However I know I can sing in tune, and have been in two musicals as an ensemble member.

When I auditioned for these shows the director always assigned us a song from that show to sing, since the company is very small.

This has worked ok, but I would appreciate it if somebody could suggest a couple of really simple musical theatre songs I could work on, just to be a little more prepared.

Sorry if this is a bit of an odd request, but hopefully someone has some ideas. :)

It is very hard picking out a song for someone over the internet.  I don’t know your type or personality or singing range. Also I tend to prepare a new audition song for each audition.  Generally they do not want you to sing a song from the show you are auditioning for, however, what I’ll do is try to find a song similar to one from the show especially sung by the character I want to play.

I suggest you look for the type of characters you’d like to play and work on songs they sing.

You should find a pianist to help you, even if it is just one hour. Discuss what you’re doing and what you need. The places I audition for want only 18 bars! So I have to be judicious and creative in cuttings. Have the pianist mark up your sheet music and then play it once so you can record it to work with it on your own.  You’ll need that sheet music with markings to give the audition pianist and be able to explain it to him/her.

BTW I like Music Notes to get sheet music  http://www.musicnotes.com/ - http://www.musicnotes.com/  I can buy it online and I have the key transposed to fit my range!  For me that is a good thing, but sometimes you’ll not do your pianist a favor. Smile

Yeah, I understand the difficulty of helping someone you cannot see/hear!

Thanks for your comment about the pianist though, it makes a lot of sense. :)

Simple (IMO) songs for females:  My Favorite Things from Sound of Music, Memory from Cats (you can find a really simple version if you buy a book of musical theatre favorites sheet music), Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music.  I really, really love Moments in the Woods for a nice mezzo piece.  :)  Break a leg!
