Thought I'd try something new with our current production, 'Snow White & Friends'.  Two of my actresses are high school students (RESPONSIBLE high school students), so I asked if they'd like to do some marketing at school on Friday.  They're wearing their costumes to school for the day and passing out flyers promoting the show.  Most of their friends have already purchased tickets, but we're hoping this encourages others to come out as well!

I'll keep you posted as to what the outcome is!

Okay ... an early follow up ...

The high school students were so enthusiastic about promoting the show ... but, not the school.  Disapprove  They felt that, because it wasn't "school related" they couldn't allow it.  However, they did make it until 10:30 before anyone made them change.  That's 2 hours of flyers passed out in costume!  (They continued passing out flyers the rest of the school day.)

I'll let you know if it improves our attendance.

PS ... I had originally wanted the girls to do publicity on a weekend in town visiting businesses, restaurants, parks, libraries, etc. but it didn't work out.

Under the forum "running your theatre" and then the topic "how do you advertise your shows" someone had a post about a cheap place to print color two-sided business cards.  I think the flyers were big and obvious.  I still like the students passing things out, but maybe they could pass out the business cards on the sly.  Not as obvious maybe less complaints?  Just a thought.  I really like the business card idea.  Check out that post.  I think it was vistaprint?  There was a web site address too and it was only like $50.  for a ton of cards.

I think the entire thing worked to our advantage.  We passed out "mini flyers" (1/4 sheet) and, even out of costume, managed to bring in quite a few of the tween/teen crowd that normally don't make it to our productions.

I'm a big believer in the business card approach.  We just print our own on my home printer on card stock ... and sometimes on regular paper.  It fits in a wallet nice.

I do it in MS Word using a template.

Sounds like it was still quite effective, even if the school wasn't too impressed by the idea! :)
