Has anyone produced this musical? Has anyone heard of it? It won several awards Off Broadway a few years ago. I have a theatre considering it for a high school and college summer program.
Here's the issue. It's about a high school where everyone is gay and being straight is something to hide. There's no sex, no swearing, no violence...the show is cleaner than Grease. The message is great too--it's about acceptance. My only concerns are whether parents of younger high school kids might have a problem with it (if they want their kids to be involved this summer, but don't like this particular show) and whether audiences will come. I don't like programming according to finances, but we can't afford to have a show fail financially.
Does anyone have any input? Especially if you've done this show outside of a major urban area?

How conservative of an area are you in? I know I wouldn't attempt something like that where I live. We can get away with a little bit, but by your description it seems quite a bit "in your face" and could be construed as part of the evil nefarious gay agenda!!!! haha

I should have added where we are. We're in Connecticut, so I'm not afraid of not having support for this. I'm just concerned that just enough would think it inappropriate for teenagers.

I'm also in CT (New Haven)
our schools have done quite a few productions of "The Laramie Project" with no issues at all.
face it - there will ALWAYS be people who complain about SOME thing. I haven't heard about this play ... which would be my concern if you need a large audience, not the content.
HOWEVER - if you do it, and need some help - let me know! Sounds like something I would get involved in LOL.
p.s. just FYI - your website link doesn't work

Thanks. Those are some great points. I wouldn't question doing the Laramie Project, and this is significantly lighter than that of course. We do need to sell tickets, but my feeling is this show could find an audience a lot easier than something like another summer production of The Music Man.
If you would like to be involved, send an email. If we end up doing it, I'll let our director know. Thanks for letting me know about the link too.
P.S. No offense to anyone doing The Music Man.
