Besides Annie... are there any musicals [for youth] that feature lots of girls?  I have so many talented young actresses ages 10-18 that need juicy roles!

Cinderella is one option, but it seems limited to a point.

Any other thoughts?  We've done Edwina, Honk, and Wizard of Oz.

No musicals for girls, but we have a great play for (mostly) a young female acting group ...

http://www.playsandmusicals.co.uk/plays/twoact/drama/magdalen.htm - The Magdalen Whitewash (4m, 16f)
Brought to recent attention by the film 'The Magdalene Sisters', this play vividly portrays the despair and inhumanity inflicted on the 'Maggies' - those unfortunate girls who had the misfortune to be institutionalised in the Magdalen Laundries. Their crimes? Being pregnant mainly. Their punishment? To be separated from their familes and work long hours in the laundry. Requires a mostly young cast.

... it's gritty stuff, challenging and thought-provoking, but quite suitable for the age group you mention. Download a free preview script and check it out.

Hello again Joy,
one year we had truckloads of talented 15 to 18 year old high school girls, so our director found an "ensemble musical" that gave many of them their own solo. It's called http://www.lowell.to/Studio/MVC-002F.JPG - "Smile!" , and it's a parody of 1980's beauty pageants. Here is photo of the two dozen http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile08.jpg - "contestants" . Plus there is the demanding lead female role of the http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile09.jpg - pageant director. The show also has 4 male leads, including the http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile11.jpg - dictatorial choreographer , plus 2 bratty boys who break into the girls http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile16.jpg - dormatory bathroom.

"Smile!" is http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile01.jpg - simple to stage and keeps the girls busy http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile15.jpg - scene after http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile17.jpg - scene. Although as a designer, I must admit that staging some scenes can be a little tough. Because the stage version suffers in translation from the original motion picture...(in some of the same logistical ways that "Bugsy Malone, Jr." and "Disney's High School Musical" suffer in their translations from screen to stage). But that's another story.

If you have a dozen girls of equal talent, "Smile!" is a good way to showcase them rather evenly. Plus, this show has numerous contemporary parallels to the http://www.lowell.to/Studio/smile03.jpg - bitter competition and http://www.lowell.to/Studio/MVC-268F.JPG - show biz glitz found on "American Idol", which the girls can relate to.

Good luck, Dana

I add my recommendation for "Smile" to Mr. Lowell's. It's really quite clever and funny - and there are lots of roles for a variety of "types."

Not sure if it is a musical, but " The Sert Life of Girls" is pretty good!

You might look into "Olivia Twist."  It's on Lazy Bee Scripts.  10 girls, 4 boys.  Cute little show with a great villain, but it only runs about 75 minutes, which might not be long enough for your needs.  You can peruse it for free on Lazy Bee -
