We are looking for something different for our group this year.  We have done mostly comedy - with a few dramas thrown in - but wanted to try something a little different.  We would love any suggestions you have for a good fantasy, dark comedy or something edgy.  We aren't into melodrama or murder mystery.  Thanks for helping!

Christopher Durang has many interesting One Acts. "Naomi in the Living Room" is a good one.

How about Genet?  The Maids or Deathwatch are both great shows, very intense.

We've got a great little one-acter that might just fit your bill ...

Fate's Thread (1m, 4f)
Winner - BEST PLAY : All England Theatre Festival (North East Heats) 2004
Susan suffers a fatal accident caused by her husband, Jack. She meets Alice and Harriet in the graveyard who, also being dead, have to persuade Susan to reconcile herself to the fact that she has been been murdered. Can they do this, or will Susan be forced to spend the rest of eternity in the Sea Of Lost Souls? Fates Thread is a ghost story. It's a light comedy, and a race against time to save a soul.

Christopher Durang has already been mentioned, but I directed his one act "Wanda's Visit" at a one act festival and it got a wonderful response.  It has some good edgy humor that might be what you are looking for, as well as a fun "twist" ending.

Scooter Thomas Makes it to the Top of the World, by Peter Parnell. I directed this for competition, and took 2nd place at Nationals a few years back. It's a beautiful show, virtually no set (we did it with boxes and only boxes, and a cyc). 2 actors. It's funny, it's poignant - and fantastic to direct. The audiences loved it at every level.

I have a play called Tuna Fish Eulogy (which went on to win 2nd overall with the Riverside Players at the National Drama Festival Association British All-Winners Festival)

It's very different, and is in the form of a ladder play.

In my too-many-to-fess-up-to years working in the theatre, my absolute most treasured theatre memory is directing a production of "The Maids." It was one of those rare times when the perfect cast and the perfect designers met the perfect script for that moment and pure magic happened.

If you have three incredibly talented women - or men - I highly second this recommendation. Though it may not be good for a competition one act - it's rather longer than the usual hour requirement.

Nikki,

I saw your show in Altoona-my show was also in competition. It was a beautiful production-we sat watching it and knew it was the winner (unfortunately for us).

Thank you so much for your compliments! I absolutely loved every single second of working with that show, and the comments we received from judges and feedback from every level of competition was so gratifying! Which show was yours? How great was it to work in that theatre ... even if it was almost impossible to find beer in Altoona after dark!!!!!!
