We're doing Holes soon and I was thinking in order to accomplish the actual holes maybe I could build a sort of raked stage from the top half up. This way the boys could actually get down into the holes.

I have zero experience with this so I'm getting a crash course. So how could I go about doing it? I figure it has to be strong enough for people to walk on but I'd rather it not be so heavy.

Usually for a raked stage I've used platforms constructed normally. The legs of the platforms are the only modification. The legs are at a right angle at the top of the leg where it attaches to the platform, but angled at the bottom--and of course cut in height appropriately.

Consider sticking with platforms as tried and true technology, even though it isn't lightweight. Holes in the platforms can be strategically placed to allow the boys to drop into and rise from.

Another option would be to use a stud wall system. Every 2' OC build a stud wall (a long 2X4 of 1X4 on bottom, and top with 2X4 uprights every 1'6"; Cut the top at an angle). Lay the stud walls out every 2', and place 3/4" plywood down on top with the seams meeting on a stud wall. Quick, easy and all your material will be reusable. You also wont have to worry about cutting up a platform for the holes. Note that an equity approved rake is no more than 1" rise per 1' or run. Anything more gets to be unsafe for actors.
