Our costume designer has done every show for at least 5 years.  It's extremely generous of her.  But there never seems to be a play without a challenge for her.  She doesn't want actors providing their own shirts, as they get ruined by the makeup.

Any suggestions for a play that can give her a break?

I think "Our Town" is without props/costumes, but I could be very wrong about that.

Any others?

Definitely NOT Our Town. Our Town has minimal sets and props but it's normally done with proper period costumes.

Best bet would be to do something contemporary, something that can be set in present day so you can use every day clothes for costumes.

I've never heard of that play.  Can you tell me more about it?

Lets just say, costumes aren't a problem... (your rating, maybe)

If you are doing Our Town there are period costumes--and a fairly large cast--as a costumer with 60 plus shows over the past 18 years I would not consider Our Town a 'break'!  If you are looking at non-musicals --Rumors, or The Odd Couple is pretty easy (both male and female) Rehearsal for Murder, Cemetary Club, and Of Mice and Men are also good picks. Look for something contemporary or something that is not time-specific where you could go to a thrift store and costume the show.

Sylvia or The DIning Room by AR Gurney are both minimal set, costumes, and props.  Both have some strong language but the author has included suggestions for taming down the language.

Whether or not you use "period costumes" or have the actors provide their own, someone still has the task of developing a costume plot.  You must be specific as to what you want.

Example:  I once asked my actors to provide "church clothes" for a play and ended up with jeans and t-shirts.  Apparently that's what they wear to church!  EGADS
