Hello all,
I have been struggling for months with what to name a newly formed theater. We will incorporate live theater/old time radio shows/vaudeville/and traveling entertainment that comes thru town. All with an old time classic flare--but not to limit ourselves. Also, working on that non-profit status.... The name I that keeps returning - Rialto. Now, do I add more to the name in order to be more descriptive? Such as the following: Company; Playhouse (already one in the next town over--just a stones throw); Theater; Stage....???? The word Repertory is NOT an option.
I can let go of Rialto. I would deeply appreciate all your suggestions!
Best Regards, Gracie

What about the TIVOLI, LIMELIGHT, WINDMILL or LYRIC Theatre?
All of whom were old time music halls/ vaudeville & even Burlesque. Now there is one? Which is pronounced 'Burly Q' in Annie Get your gun, but may be rather a generically suggestive a term for 'tits 'n Arse or peep shows.
Is there any thing geographically that is synonymous of your area. Not to influence your thinking but, we named our theatre the Phoenix. Which came about because of the our local City name, Cockburn. So an extension of that was the old original Cockpit theatres in London. Where the actual Cockpit theatre burn down in the 1700's, so they got Inigo Jones to rebuild a new theatre on the burnt out site. He named it the Phoenix theatre, as rising from the ashes. It was the first to utalise the Proscenium Arch, modeled on roman & greek theatres.
On a tangent the our location was named after Admiral George Cockburn, by Captain Stirling who claimed & started the swan River Settlement, for the British Crown, here in western Australia. Another link was old George Cockburn, was the Admiral in charge of sacking Washington & burning the capitol building there, during the war of Independence. Which the locals used white wash to cover up the scorch marks & fire damage. hence the renaming it as the 'white House. Another link was because on the original area land allotment, it was named Phoenix., because of the establishment of Lime Kilns there. Of which there is only the present Phoenix shopping Centre, as any hint of the original area naming.
So it naturally followed we become similarly named. Which given time we hope it will become an easily recognised venue & location. So if you will a brand name of which a number of business in the area carry.
Enough waffle for now!

How about:
The Grand Tour Theatre, or just The Grand, The Grand Company Players. Heritage Playhouse?
Is your community name a possiblity? Any sponsor have a great name?
But you are missing out on a great opportunity. You are asking us in the Community Green Room--who won't be at your shows. Why not use publicity to get a full house for the opening show! Have you considered a local contest, with the prize being a picture with the town mayor, so publicity, and season tickets. If you do the contest, you can psychologically involve the judges to be interested in your outcome. You choose the judges to be the community influencers (those who can get people to the show) and give them each a pair of tickets to performance #1. BTW--get a sponsor to sponsor the contest (pay the costs to publicize). Sponsor gets ad in the season 1 program, and a line mentioning them in every contest ad. Go on the radio for free call in publicity. For now call your self: Brown Bag Theatre or The Theater Who Shall Not Be Nameless or Theatre in Search of a Name--that ought to make people take notice.

Hi Gracie,
If you are going for that post-Victorian, old-timey, down-the-street-from-Cracker Barrel, Garrison Keillor type of community theatre, and you are doing vaudeville, radio plays, and silent movies with a live organist, along with your regular play productions, then I suggest a title that invokes the overall aesthetic experience you want your audience to have before the show even starts.
Rialto Vintage Theatre
This title would telegraph to the patrons exactly what experience they are in for regardless of the production. (With the word theater spelled the British way). Short and sweet...just 3 words...without the "The" at the beginning, even.
Maybe your ushers, (for certain events), could wear those round, white skimmer hats, like in "Music Man". And you could find old-style fonts to print on all your posters, programs, and the front marquee. It would make a warm and pleasant theme. Yet I think a contemporary musical or drama could still be staged here without any negative conflict with this overall thematic aura.
Good luck, Dana

Dana ~ Thank you for the wonderful suggestions. No excuse for not thanking you so long ago--BUT computer issues. I have a few locals who want to join in my efforts. The name isn't finalized but we will be sure to use some of your ideas, (ushers). This is a fabulous site and I appreciate you input.

Gracie

Is your newly formed theater a troop or a building? I was taught that theatre is the activity that you do in a theater.
Our group is named after the town that is our home. Unfortunately we are a very frugal community, and haven't built a new theater since the 50s. It isn't the worst venue I've ever seen, but compared to the centers for performing arts that most of the surrounding communities.
There is a lot of interest in moving our shows to one of these newer venues, but there are a few reasons that I, as facilities director, have resisted. For one thing, it would be confusing to have a group named after a town that we don't do shows in. Perhaps a bigger deal is that the town gives us full use of 2 classrooms and a gymatorium to store our stuff and to use for building our sets. I fear that moving our shows would reduce their motivation to let us use the space.
The point being that I would hesitate to name a group after a town, but it might be a fine idea for a building. One of our local groups is called "theatre to go" and they use a container of Chinese food as their logo. I think that is one of the best names I've ever heard for a theatre group.

This is off topic but I thought you may be interested anyhow. There is a website that sells vintage theater posters http://www.lunagirl.com/TheatrePosters-BurlesqueVaudeville.htm. Just thought you might want to check it out.

The Orpheum Theatre
Many good Orpheums around and was a common name many years ago. Some Orpheums are for movies and some are legit theatres so that could cover it all!
