Hello, My fiancee and I think that the children's book You Are Special by Max Lucado would make a wonderful 1-act for youths. Does anybody know the necessary steps we'd need to take to legally adapt this book into a play? Thank you very much.

I'd try to contact the author or the author's agent first. Don't go to the publisher right away, they're likely to be more resistant to it. The fact is, the publisher may actually have the rights to stage adaptations and the like, but the author would know that. The author is more likely to be amenable to an adaptation.

Not bad advice. However it is usually the publisher that would retain the rights to authorize any kind of adaptations. It may also depend on what kind of arrangement is in the author's contract as to who retains that right. ------------- BD

True, but I think it's likely the author won't dismiss you out of hand. They don't necessarily have the adaptation rights, but having them advocating for you is pretty essential. ------------- www.donzolidis.com |
