I've learned of a band who is upgrading their equipment and is willing to sell their soundboard at a fraction of the cost of a new one.  (We're talking about 1/6th the original cost!)  It appears to be in perfert working condition.  Would you consider the purchase, or buy new, and why?

Depending on the age of the equipment and the use it has had...it could be a great find. If you have someone that can deal with equipment problems, you maybe set. Warranty is an issue...as you would not have any, but you may not need any as well.
Most musicians I deal with upgrade and then flog old equipment because space is more valuable to them than old equipment.
It is not a black or white answer to this question...go see the equipment and make sure it works before purchase. Get their contact information, and find out why they are selling so cheaply. Trust your gut!

They've had it less than a year and it's been used for less than 100 hours.

If it's in good shape, I'd say give it a try.  Equipment can take an awful lot of abuse that isn't visible initially.  I'd ask for a trial period, if possible
