I am posting on two topic boards... forgive me if it's a repeat for youSmile

I would like to hear from those who have produced this show.   We are considering this for our next Youth production, but when I read the script recently, I was shocked by the ending.  I have the "muny" version, which is a bit more simplistic for staging purposes.  In this ending, Dorothy's shoes are totally ignored-- then, she and the Wizard hop into a rocket ship and fly away.

Rocket ship?  Is this the same ending as the longer version?  Perhaps the rocket is in the original book?  I would imagine this would cause a stir in the audience if Dorothy ignores her shoes and just hops into a rocket.  It just doesn't seem to fit-- especially given the history of the movie.

We didn't do the rocket, we agree with you.
We did the balloon basket.  We used our genie lift.  We set it in between a midstage black traveller that closed, so it was all black around the genie lift bucket.  We made the genie lift bucket look like a basket and had some ropes going up to what appeared to be the bottom of the balloon.  We had steps up to the genie lift bucket so the wizard could walk up the steps and into the genie lift bucket.  We were worried about the noise because a genie lift is loud.  But, the main part is upstage behind the curtain, and when the balloon is going up, people are making noise, so you really didn't hear it in the house.

I've done my research... the Muny script is quite pathetic, in my opinion. The RSC is almost (if not completely) word-for-word from the movie.  All the same with the exception of 2 additional songs.

We are moving forward with this show as a youth production-- but it is slated in the mainstage season.  Clap
