We are considering doing 'Madeline's Christmas' next season and can figure out how to do all the special effects in our tiny space except the magic carpet scenes.  We stage our shows in a church with no wing space, no fly space, no scrim, etc ... teeny tiny!!!  I've considered using puppets of the girls on magic carpets, or shadow puppets on the door.  Any other suggestions?

UV &/or projection background.
If you have little upstage area & off stage wings, you could bounce the image off a mirror, on to a cyc or cloth. Or the old 'smoke & mirror' trick! Using UV & dry ice/ smoke/haze this will give the illusion of a flying carpet, add a fan for an air movement effect chucked in.
[with any sort of smoke/fog have an exhaust fan to control it - as it has a mind of it's own.
It means playing around a bit with overall lighting wash levels, untill your happy - but well worth it.

we did the production last year and we had dry ice for clouds. the top of the eiffel tower and things that go around the girl's waist that have a carpet and stuffed legs so it looks like they are sitting on the carpet. all of the girls had on black tights so you couldnt see thir legs in the dry ice. looked amazing. let me know if you need any ideas for how mis clavell rides at the end of the show.
