I am currently working on a new play in which a character steps on a landmine. Does anyone have experience in creating a flashpot?

Is it going to go off right under the actor? If so, for safety reasons, I wouldn't use a flashpot. As an alternative you could use a compressed air to blow up dust and maybe some debris made of Styofoam or other light materials.

One thing to remember, a flash pot isn't smoke and mirrors.
A flash pot is fire and sparks with smoke.
Like Dan says, if the effect is to be close to an individual, ask if you really need a flash pot. I have worked with various effects from flash pots to smoke to lightning strikes. Each one in it's own right brings up safety issues. If you do use flash pots, make sure there is someone that has experience with this type of effect.
