My theater director wants fluffy clouds that hang from the sky....what can I make them out of that will be stiff enough to hang and still look fluffy?  Think cheap.

With clouds you can go from the sublime to the pathetic?
What is the show & the idea behind it?

It is for Alice in Wonderland.  They need to look semi-realistic, not wonderlandesque.

Talk him out of it.

Anything hanging from the ceiling is going to get in the way of something -- lights, flats, curtains, whatever.

But, if you're really talented (or know a painter who is) airbrush white/blue/gray paint on flat luaun (or other sturdy, thin material) in shapes cut-out like clouds.

If done well, they'll look 3-dimensional and realistic -- check out some paintings by the Old Masters themselves -- the illusion of depth is amazing.

Well, I was able to come up with something...pink foam insulation board cut into cloud shapes, with the expandable foam from a can to give it some texture, spray painted the whole thing white, and then hot glued the fake polyester snow from the home depot on top.  It has a lot of dimension, looks puffy, is lightweight and can hang.....

If you have a Tab Track?
You could hang them for moving clouds, also use a suitable cloud GOBO on them to erhance.
