If the dates on the discussion board don't look right to you, you can change the format to suit your part of the world.
  • Click the "Settings" button at the top of the screen
  • On the next page, click "Edit Profile" at the top of the list to access your user details and preferences
  • On the next screen, scroll all the way down to "Forum Preferences." The last selection in the list is "Date Format," where you can select your preference for date display from a drop-down box.

Thanks to B-M-D for pointing out that all the dates had defaulted to European style -- I fixed it in my profile but hadn't realized that everybody else had the same problem, because once I changed it for myself, it looked A-OK!
