Here's some video from rehearsal,(sound removed to avoid major
copyright issues) showing how we "materialize" Rocky out of nowhere on
stage, not 10 feet away from the audience. If you look reallllly
closely you can see how it's done, but there's enough going on on stage

Hi Eddy..thanks for sharing your work......I like the gates and the backdrop but what I really like are the gadgets that hold "the slab" together in different configurations. I worked on a design last year that had eight boxes that looked liked benches.....they could be set seperately on stage but also hooked together for beds, low tables, steps etc. They had hinged lids for props. I was trying to make a sort of generic bench that could be re-used in all of our productions. I like your platform and will see if I can incorporate your bracing ideas. How are you attaching the posts to the sides of the bed? I found some hardware ( don't know the actual name for it) It's lie a hook and eye but the hook is a flat piece of metal with a notch and the eye is a peg rather than a loop. The advantage is that the fastener lays flat. Anyways..please keep us posted....I like to watch some else's progress..... ------------- "behind a thin wall of logic panic is waiting to stampede" |

I'm cheating on that one -- I'm not actually attaching the posts to the
bed, since the bed doesn't have to move. It's only on for two
very short scenes and then comes right back apart again. The
director's themes for the show include sort of viewing things in
different ways and deconstruction/reconstruction -- taking things apart
and putting them back together again. So far, everything works
very well. We're certainly getting our money's worth out of
those two carts in this show. :)

Way cool. Love the gates. I'm also designing a set for Rocky right now too. Maybe I should get some pics up as well. Your production looks to be very different from ours, visually and artistically. We didn't have room for a whole tank/slab, but are making a tilted table, much like the "monster movies" have. Space considerations and all. The theatre has no stage left entrances and a very shallow backstage. hope to see some pics of your finished product. |

I'll keep 'em coming. As it is, we moved into the performance
space today, and the uneven floor realllllly pissed with my set
pieces. Miffed, i shaved off a little here and there, we'll try
'em again tomorrow.

It does really get right up your nose, when that happens! We moved into an old used & abused space, for our inaugural production of ?Stepping Out?. The stage was old T&G Jarrah [Red hard wood] plank flooring, with lumps, bumps, splinters & nail heads. As we were limited in time for the bump in, it was easier & quicker, to cover it completely in thin MDF & under gaffer it together. Rather than taking the trouble to top dress & find all the splinters & protruding nail heads, by dragging around a warm prop by the legs. Also the MDF took up all gaps so the set pieces sat square & gave a flush surface to easily paint with a kitchen squeezy mop for the show. In fact the MDF sheets are still down & work well with all ours & other user sets since!  ------------- Joe Western Gondawandaland turn right @ Perth. Hear the light & see the sound. *nod* Yeah, The Barn could definitely use a new floor. Perhaps one of these days.... Fortunately, I have some wiggle-room with the carts and whatnot, the way they're assembled, I should be able to lower the caster plates, move the casters to the very corners, shave an inch and a half off of the verticals and make it work and maintain the same height.
