Has anyone solicited original scripts? If so, could you just speak to the process you developed- from designing guidelines for submitions to the process of script reading and the selection criteria?  Any thoughts you have to share on the subject would be helpful.

Thanks so much,

lalunabella

When our CT Play Selection committee reads plays we mostly use the review criteria that Mike and Chris have posted on this site.

We get playwrights emailing us scripts and usually take them in whatever format they arrive (I copy them off), but we ask that the authors send them in by a certain date so that we can decide our season in advance. Then we put them all in a box at our local library (which kindly keeps them behind the counter) so everyone on the committee has access.  We meet to discuss them according to our review criteria and try to stick with our guidelines.

That said we did contract with one playwright who could not get her script done on time and only sent a first draft.  We agreed to go with the play (our October production) and she STILL hasn't finished the script.  Wish we had stayed with our guidelines.
