Thanks Carissa! Sorry for the late reply, been busy with things. I wasn't trying to stay in any particular 'age' with the writing - past or present. I wrote the songs with high school musician 'talent' in mind, so I kept the songs relatively simple and short - no solo's and such (except 'In Me' where I hope I can find a student flute player). I should probably call the script 'a comedy with songs' rather than a musical. The songs are there to help the story along, except 'Fish' which is just a fun batch of absurdity (I hope).
The drama teacher finally read the darn thing (took him over a year...;>) but he loved it. There's been a lot more editing (down to 161 pages now) and I've scrapped the Fairy Godmother scene for time - which also gets rid of 3 extras and 2 lighted props and a 7 minute song, so I guess that helps. I rewrote the scene bringing in Lily's friends earlier than act 2 and had them interplay a bit with William which works out overall better for the storyline.
The drama teacher wants to do the play this fall so I expect to be doing a lot of work soon (set construction, musical direction/teaching/hoping/praying). I know the songs sort of sound the same but I'm just one guy doing all the parts on my home recording equipment. I can 'hear' all sorts of different instruments that i'll <sadly> never be able to play (banjo, flute, piano, harpsichord, etc...) so I can only hope there will be some students who CAN play such things and want to. For some songs, the guitar will be the main voice, others, the piano.
Thanks for the vocals offer but I'm on dial-up so there's really no way for me to send large wav/track files. I've also changed my recording setup from a Tascam DP01FX 8 track to a 32 track Korg recorder (I don't use computers - no big honkin' knobs to turn - gotta have knobs!) so all the masters to those songs are un-accessible, stored on my computer.
I also got rid of the drum machine (the only thing that wasn't 'me' on the demos) and picked up an Alesis electronic drumset and a proper condenser vocal recording mic (I used my old band vocal mic on the demos and had to sing 'across' it instead of into it). There's a new pic of my [ahem, cough-cough] 'studio' on the Tavern site if your interested.
All the songs are now on Soundclick (link via the tavern site) but you'll have to sign up for free before you can download the 3-7 meg mp3s. There's also a few other new tunes I've been fooling around with (mostly ideas with some form of structure). The mixes aren't that great especially since I only had headphones to mix down with at the time). I'm still learning the new mixing/recording board so it'll be awhile before i really get anything new recorded and posted.
So now (and for awhile actually) you can read the script and listen to the songs. Obviously, the actual music will be somewhat different when it starts and stops during the play as such things will need to be worked out a bit. I've probably rewrote the script over a hundred times (bits here and bits there...) but I always seem to find something wrong with it (my wife found some spelling/grammar errors just yesterday...) so the printer is always going (and it's really starting to go too! The paper jams, ink smears, it's tired...).
I can only hope that 10 males and 5 females will be in drama this year or it'll never happen...!
