A week ago, for chrissakes.  A week ago, and I just heard.

My take on Mr. Wilson, posted to a local board:

Ask this question of the audience at any of your shows, and see what kind of answers you get:

"Who am I? I wrote the highest-grossing (for a single year) straight play in Broadway history, a play featuring one of America's most famous film and stage actors. I won seven Drama Critics Circle awards, a Tony, and two Pulitzers for my plays. I was involved in a huge public controversy with a famous critic. Stars of the level of Philicia Rashad, Lawrence Fishburne, and Leslie Uggams have appeared in my plays."

How many correct answers would you get?

If you did the same for Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, or Neil Simon, would the results be different?

Anybody care to speculate on why this great writer isn't famous?

August Wilson isn't famous???

Maybe he's just not as well known in middle American
suburban theatres, since his plays require African American
actors, and community theatre in many (most?) suburban areas
is very white?

But, I think here in urban areas of the east coast, he's quite
famous, indeed!

We're fortunate here in New Haven - quite a few of his plays
premiered here at Longwharf.

My point exactly.  Although we're hardly what I'd call 'suburban'; our population is within 10,000 of New Haven's.  Much less cosmopolitan, though.

Although, Gaafa, the "country cap" probably does have something to do with it . . .
