Hi! I'm a young actress and I need some help. I just got accepted into a two week camp at Wright State University and I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the theatre department there. Also, I don't have any experience with college professors (told ya I was young) and I need some advice on how to deal with them. Do I speak out to show I'm eager, or stand back so they don't think I'm annoying? Please help!

heh heh - lesson one about the theatre: intent

you should speak out because you have something valid to
add or a question about something you're unsure ... nothing is
more annoying than a student who takes up class time
yammering because they want to 'show they're eager.'

conversely, don't hold back and miss being part of the class
because you don't want to appear annoying. You don't gain
anything by it or learn anything if your questions go
unanswered - and others can lose the experience or
knowledge you may have to share.

Just as everything on stage should be driven by intent, it
doesn't hurt off stage to think about why you're doing
something and its reception!

sounds like a great experience - enjoy it!

Go with the intent to learn. To many young artist use these classes as a social event instead of a learning experience. Pay attention, contribute to the class when you have something to say, socialize after, or before class. I think you will have a great learning experience, and any Prof. would be happy to have a student like this in class.

This is probably too late, but I just found the board.  Sorry.  But I can't miss the opportunity to have an Irish diva under my wing!

Anyway:

Wow, what a great opportunity for you.

I would suggest you use this as a chance to be bad!  No, no, not morally bad!  You have the chance to try things you would never try at your school - don't be afraid, the teachers (that's all they are, teachers) are there to help, and you'll never see them again.  So take some chances, and don't worry about how you look to the teachers or other students.

Let us know how it went!
