Hello,

Looking for suggestions for plays to perform at an all-girls high school.  Did Steel Magnolias last year and will be doing Radio TBS this fall.  Any other good ones you can think of?

How about:

'night Mother by Marsha Norman (kind of dark --- deals with suicide) (2 women)

The Cover of Life by RT Robinson (great play, great roles for women, period piece --- set during World War 2, however there is one role for a young man in his early 20s)

***

These are just a few. What you could do, however, is send away for the Samuel French, Dramatists and Dramatics Publishing catalogs. These catalogs contain an "all women" section of plays with brief summaries of each play. You can probably order these catalogs online by going to their websites.

I hope that helps! Good luck!

Patrick

The Women by Clare Booth Luce. Large cast...need a good costumer. Recently revived on Broadway. Very catty stuff.

I have also had luck with all female Shakespeare  (remember they used to be all male!)

A very funny one act called This is a Test could be done with all female, I believe.

Vanities by Jack Heifner. 3 characters, great script...Some rough language...how progressive is your community?

Good luck,

countbio

During WWII a lot of wonderful plays were produced.  For instance, CRY HAVOC and THE WOMEN.  Then, of course, there is NUNSENSE, if you're into musicals.  If you're looking for a particular age group, go to Baker's Plays.  Lots of listenings.  If you aren't looking for any specific age ... I have a play available online that might interest you.  It has had several productions, all very well-received. It is titled GODDESSES OF THE WESTERN WORLD ... For information:

GODDESSES OF THE WESTERN WORLD is now available online through ScriptCircle, an email theatre play script service linked to the UK Theatre Web. Go to: http://www.scriptcircle.co.uk/ - http://www.scriptcircle.co.uk and click on ?One-Acts.? The posting of this play is in response to queries following an initial production in Perth, West Australia, specifically where/how one might go to get a copy of the work.

Also, I have another one-act with three female roles.  Breakdown follows:

Title: Crossing Bells

Logline: A former stripper owns and operates a small art gallery where no painting is for sale.

Genre: Contemporary surrealistic drama.

Characters: 3 female.

Set: 1, a rural train station converted into an art gallery.

Running Length: 10 minutes.

Copyright ? 2002.

Production History: Aldephia Cable Entertainment (in production).  Richard Tirrell, director and producer.  CB has also been accepted for production by the Phoenix Senior Theatre in the City of Cockburn, West Australia; and as a radio drama by Shoestring Radio Theatre, San Francisco, California.

I can email this script to you as an attachment.

Most of my plays have predominantly female roles.  Breakdowns on three others listed below:

Title: Divorce Sale

Logline: A group of neighbors hold a s?ance to contact the deceased husband of a ditsy mother-in-law.

Genre: Contemporary comedy.  (Ideal for community theatre and dinner theatre venues.)

Set: 1, double-car garage.

Characters: 7 female, 3 male.

Running Length: 90 minutes.

Copyright ? 1994, 1993.

Production History: 2 stage productions (Dalby, Australia, and New York City, New York), and 2 staged-readings (San Bernardino, California).  Play is also in circulation through the California branches of the American Association of University Women.

Publication: Aran Press, Inc.  (All rights reserved by the playwright, including stage performances and royalties.)

Title: Golden Elliott

Logline: A deeply troubled Vietnam War veteran must finally confront the truth about how the brutality of that war changed forever his idealized childhood friendship.

Genre: Contemporary drama.

Characters: 2 female, 1 male.

Set: 1, service porch.

Running Length: 35 minutes.

Copyright ? 1994.

Production History: 3 stage productions (2 in Los Angeles, California, and 1 in Forfar, Scotland), workshop (Galway, Ireland), 1 radio production (KFSU-FM, San Francisco, California), 1 stage reading (San Bernardino, CA), and 1 theatre arts department student production (Conestoga College, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada).

Publication: Smith & Kraus? The Best Women?s Stage Monologues, 1997.

Title:  Perfect World

Logline: An unexpected New Year?s Eve caller disrupts the seemingly perfect life of a successful Broadway actress.

Genre: Contemporary drama.

Characters:  7 female, 4 male.

Set: 1 set, living room.

Copyright ? 1998.

Production History: 1 stage production (Los Angeles, California).

I attended an all women's college and although there was a brother college where we got our men, we often ran into this problem. Twelve Angry Men - with all women, Talking With, by Jane Martin, Agnes of God, The Vagina Chronicles

Stage Door is nearly all female with a few male cameos that can be played by women.  Funny and Clean enough for even the most conservative schools.

If you're willing to do a musical, then I'd recommend "Quilters".  Great all-female show.

I think The Cover of Life is a great play. It has Six
female roles and yea one man.   It has Drama
andComedy. I am doing this play right now at our
high school and I got the lead. I really enjoy this play!

"The Women" is a really good show. A lot of wonderful parts, big and small. The props can be a little time-consuming, but definitely do-able.

The other thought, which I'm sure you've had, is to just do a show with some of the girls playing the male roles. (Hey, if Shakespeare can do it...)

A second vote here for the off-broadway revue: A...My Name is Alice.  There is some amount of language involved (which could be cut and/or revised for a high school crowd), but it's a revue format, 5 actresses (or more if you want, easy set requirements, can be done well with a piano/drums/bass combo and very, very funny at times and moving at others.

I've had enormous success with it over the years - placed in the top 10 at the American Association of Community Theater festival some years ago.

Good luck.

If you want something artsy you could use:

For Coloured Girls Who Consider Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf.

Others:

The Women is great. You could do a version of Edgar Lee Masters Spoon River Anthology with just the womens sections and you could create it yourself.  Great for monologue/character devolopment

go to samuel french and dramatist website and take a look as you can brouse on line.
