bullet Topic: WOZ crystal ball and hourglass
    Posted: 6/07/03 at 10:54pm
are there any ideas out there tomake these props stand out? I've figured out Prof marvel. Just put a glass bowl upside down on a metal candle stand. But I would like to have the witches' be huge and also try some special effect with it, like swirling smoke in it or a projection image? For the hourglass I was thinking of gluing two glass funnels together but not even sure there are glass (clear) ones out there. I'd like the sand to be able to pour thru too. Any ideas? Show is in July

Hi...we just finished up with Oz...at first we used a real hourglass but it broke long before dress rehearsal. Lesson? Dont use a real one, glass is not a good idea. Our prop department used the wooden frame and made the glass area inside out of two plastic pop bottle halves glued together in the center with a bit of tape added. It worked great and the sand ran through just fine.

We rented the hourglass from a prop house for about $30 and that worked well. It was probably not as large as I would have liked, but it worked fine for us. I made the witch's globe from a wooden base that we made and then purchased a large lighting globe from a lighting supply house here locally. We put a light inside it and it worked great. Never could project the witch's face onto it, but it worked just fine with the lighting alone. Good luck! M

We did Oz- Used the 2- 2 liter bottles and wood frame- worked great. For the witch's globe- I went to Home depot and bought a large outdoor light globe (not clear)- $18.00, then I went and bought ( at walgreens no less) a small disco light, we wrapped the color part of disco light in tissue [paper to mute the colors. The disco light was Glued inside the globe- when the time came we plugged in light and it had a swirling effect inside the globe.
