A friend of mine was reading a story, and one of the characters' mothers is described as an "atmosphere girl at the Schubert Theater." He asked if I knew what it meant, and the best I could come up with (later she's mentioned tripping on a green chiffon dress) is that she's some sort of costumed extra, not necessarily on stage but maybe circulating through the audience. Has anyone ever heard the term before?

From the author:
"Yes, someone in a gown on stage, who has no lines but contributes to the atmosphere. A friend's mother had such a job in the Schubert Theatre in New York." |
