Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: Laughter on the 23rd Floor Set Ideas Needed

   Greetings, all!
 I am directing Laughter this spring and would love to hear ideas on two tricky set issues:

1) There are to be three holes punched in a wall during the show, and the holes remain throughout.

2) Writing on a wall with ink - need a clean "slate" for each performance.

Thank you for ideas on these (and other) challenges with the show.

	Unfamiliar with the play: when you say 'punched', you mean with a fist? writing on wall with ink - what kind of ink pen? What is the period of the play? What is the period of the building? My first reaction is lots and lots of wallpaper that can be pieced in

	Hi Gelcat, Yes, punched with a fist, leaving a hole which will have a frame placed around it. The script calls for "indelible ink"- not sure what the actual writing instrument will be. The play is set in 1953, and I haven't noticed anything that stipulates in what period the building would have been constructed, so we could make it contemporary to 1953, or go earlier. 	For the punched holes.....cut jagged holes in plasterboard...then cover them with butcher paper glued to a piece of syrafoam cut to fit the hole. Glue edges of paper to the wall and mark with a small x in center. Actor puches the x. the paper now acts like wallboard because it's glued to syrafoam and thus breaks out a 'chunk' You use real wallboard on the wall or luan not canvas, so that the wall doesn't wobble or shake. for indelible ink...glue butcher paper to appropriate place on the wall, rip off when show is over and replace. Alternatively use waterbased marker, then wipe off worst of it and repaint section after show each night if needed. Alternatively, use photographer's background paper (about $30/roll comes in colors and very large sizes) over entire flat from top to bottom--rip off when done.

	Hey GracieLea I am assuming this show already happened, but in case it didn't I have directed the show and there are a lot of things to be watchful of, above and beyond the set, mostly in casting and integrety of the show... as far as the building, its self, remember that this is semi-autobiographical based on Sid Ceaser's the Show of Shows so it's super important that you keep that in mind in every way. If you haven't gone up yet and need some spesifics I can certainly help you out! Best, P@
