what is the general concensus on this??? Is it cheaper in the long run to rent or buy costumes for a cast of 40 youth ages 9-17? Any suggestions for reputable, cost effective rentals????

Try SCT Costume Shop in Spencer, IA. It's a community theatre that rents to schools mainly, rentals run $25 on average, up to 4 weeks rental if they haven't changed it since I worked there.
Buying at a comparable price for that many kids you're probably going to end up with sub-quality pieces. I would recommend looking at alexanders costumes (either alexanders dot come or alexanders costumes dot com, can't remember). Call them to set up a wholesale account as a theatre if possible. You can get harem vests for around $6, harem pants about the same. Their shiny pirate pants will last for a full run, but maybe not longer than that. The cotton ones are FANTASTIC and will last a long time (washable!). If you have a creative costume person you could really end up being able to costume the show on a great budget by purchasing some pieces you can find affordably and renting by the piece the things you can't find.

I read your post today and I might be able to help you out. I have 50 Aladdin jr costumes that normally rent for $30-35 each. I'd be happy to rent you all 50 costumes for just $800 or $20 per cast member. If you are interested I send you pictures and check on availability.

We did Scheherazade, which has probably really similar costumes to Aladdin. There are really easy to make, if you have someone around who sews. You can use inexpensive lining fabrics, because you just need something silky, and the lightweight nature is ok. Harem pants are the easiest thing in the world to sew, then you need vests and lots of rectangles for sashes and turbans. Get some trims in a bargain bin and you are there.
