Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: Glee summer workshop- questions

   I also posted this in the Money forum but thought some of the dancers/choreographers might have advice as well. 

Hi all. 

I am student at UNT in Denton TX taking a grant writing course. We are using the class to help a local community theater secure much needed grants. However, in doing so we are expected to generate a program (mine is a Glee summer workshop for kids 14-18) and a subsequent budget. The workshop would conclude with 1 ticketed performance for the community. I was not in theater or a performing choir so I have no frame of reference. I was hoping some of you could help me think of items necessary for my budget and an approximate dollar figure. The community theater itself doesn't seem to know how to anticpate these costs either. I can't win them money if I don't have an accurate budget. With school budgets for the fine arts shrinking, I think I have a good shot at winning a grant. 

Can you please help? I'd love to write a grant that would actually secure them much needed funds as well as hopefully generate some revenue for them! Please correct me if I am using any improper terminology. 

So far my budget items include:
1 director
1 choral coach
1 choreographer
wardrobe
props-?
sheet music
background music arrangements
marketing (flyers, mail outs, stamps)
utilities for their facility (I can write in some of their operating costs this way)

	you will need some budget for set, even if the theater has stock platforms, there are expenses in getting things set up and safe, getting a fresh coat of paint on the floor, etc. Are you paying rehearsal musicians? background music arrangements are great, but vocal work also requires fine tuning with an accompanist giving the correct notes for the singers to match. I would suggest that you get a someone on board to help you develop the grant that is familiar with the needs of the theater, and their current capabilities.

	One other thing which nearly always is forgotten is the $ amount of the groups contrabution towards the grant. Normally this could be at least 10% upto 25% of the total grant requested. Which can be made up in kind or from the groups contibution. This be in kind as such on the part of the group in the form of labour costs & whatever. This could be just making coffee, lunches or attending to opening or securing the venue, during work periods or for safety reasons @ the general going hourly rate, that would be expected to be charged for the same service & labour costs.
