Topic: Bunnicula! Posted: 5/04/09 at 12:25pm |
We will be staging Bunnicula in the fall and are faced with the problem of the cost of the puppets. We are a small theatre in an even smaller town (population 500) and simply cannot work the cost of the puppets into our budget for the show.
We are looking for fundraising ideas, possibly specific to this production, to offset the cost of the puppets. Rental is $400 + $100s/h or $600 to purchase. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with this play. Is it puppet theatre, or is it live with puppets?
At any rate, the first thing that comes to mind is why not build the puppets? You may have someone in your community that might like the project, perhaps someone not associated with your theatre. It may be an opportunity to draw others into theatre and further the involvement of the community.
We had someone that did a great job for us making muppet-like puppets. I had no idea that a "regular" person could make such things. She was not involved in theatre. She was a "crafter" (ie person who does crafts). She thought it would be a good challenge and a fun project. They came out great!
Now she is involved in theatre as a prop builder. She's doesn't want to do props as far as working the production, but loves building them. What an asset!
Maybe you can find such a person and then get in-kind donations from a craft store.

Bunnicula is a play about a vampire bunny. The character "Bunnicula" is a puppet. The remaining characters are acted by people.
I can't use a person dressed as Bunnicula, as per the playwright. There was one theatre that did (w/o his permission!!!) and he wasn't a happy camper, I understand.
I'll have to put my feelers out for a "crafter" who might like to do this. Thanks for the suggestion!
