Topic: Grants Posted: 12/21/08 at 11:56am |
I am new to this forum and have been reading some very generous advice. I am attempting my first attempt to requisition a grant for the non-profit CT I belong to. Is there a listing of available grants that target the CT community? I will appreciate any information that may point me towards identifying available monies in the Central New York area. Thanks for your help. Jimmy

Your best bet is local. Go to your library and ask if they can do a foundation search of area foundations (The Foundation Directory Online is a good source). That will give you a list.
Now here is something that many folks don't know. Writing a grant application is the last step, not the first. First call or visit the foundation or better yet get a introduction from a common acquaintance. Talk about your project, what you want to do, why it is good for the community, supply educational materials, get to know them. Then, over time, ask them if you can submit an application.
There may be some business that may not have a foundation but may be willing to give a gift ($) of some kind. Ask around. Develop a list of likely businesses. Take the same steps as above. Look at banks, chain retail and department stores, healthcare, professional offices, even manufacturing -- really anything you can think of.
Many people think of grants as free money. I tell them grants are not free at all. A lot of resources are invested in getting a grant, probably the biggest of all is time and hard work.
