Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: writing a musical revue / ASCAP

      Our theatre wants to do an original musical revue using songs from the movies.  Since we are going to create it ourselves and not use and already scripted show, i.e. TMI's BLAME IT ON THE MOVIES, we are aware that we need to pay fees (ASCAP/BMI).
   Does anyone have expierence working with something like this.  How do we go about doing this? / how much will it cost for say 30 songs? / Is it something that takes a long time to accomplish? / do you have to get permission from many different agents or is it done all through the unions?
    Help !  Any insight will be appreciated.

	More than likely you will need to make arrangements with ASCAP http://www.ascap.com/index.html. I would start there. Click on the contact us link at the top and then click on the licensing link on that page. If you can't find what you need or if they don't list or provide licensing for the kind of use you need you may want to contact them for clarification and where they might refer you to. Good luck!

	Our theater is doing an entire season of shows based on movies. We wanted to do a show based on movie songs as well. A very dedicated group worked tirelessly on this and came up with a concept that celebrated move movies music through the decades - from the 30's to today. The show had 84 songs - most of which were abbreviated versions but some were full 'choral' arrangements. The show ran very smoothly and was definitely a crowd pleaser - with a running time of just over 2 hours. I know they used ASCAP for rights but I'm not sure how much the cost ended up being. Some of the songs included "Over the Rainbow", "Somewhere", "Aquarius", "Stayin' Alive", "Everybody Rejoice", "Trashin' the Camp", "Season's of Love" and "You Can't Stop the Beat". Our directors cast the show with a wide variety of people so they could cover all different genres of music represented in the show. Check out some audience comments on www.actorsguildonline.com.
