Topic: safe practices for youth&adult cast Posted: 10/04/08 at 2:59pm |
We would like to provide guidelines to safe practices as part of our orientation for new cast members, families, and back stage volunteers.
Our director has had a background check done; in addition we want to have clear practices for adults and youth participants. Does anyone have guidelines they're using, or have suggestions about where we can look?
Things that make sense in the context of rehearsing a show with a bunch of community volunteers?
Thanks!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "safe practices."

Sorry if I wasnt' clear.
We're looking at "safe practices" for mixed groups -- like there's always two adults in the room with youth, or one adult and one youth don't drive alone to the storage shed togther.
We haven't had guidelines til now, and bc of incidents in the region (not with CTs), we want to have guidelines in place.
Mostly adults and youth are in one big rehearsal space, but there's also all sorts of exceptions -- costuming stuff, runs to the storage shed, working in the light booth, rides home after rehearsal, etc. What is reasonable?
For example, do we tell the costumer she must have another adult with her at all times? And if its a parent volunteer, that the costumer also has to make sure that adult volunteer isn't alone in a room with a youth? That you can only go to the storage shed with two adults (so our teen boy can't help one adult?) or with your own child? That is how its looking. These are the kinds of practices that churches and other community organizations are using.
What are other CTs doing?

We make every volunteer 18 or over sign this form. There was an incident wiht a local arts group (not a theatre) with a recently quitting Exec Dir. getting caught in one of those on line stings, thinking he was going to meet a 13 yr. old he was arrested.
We went through a time of considering doing much more, background checks on all volunteers was one suggestion that we just could not afford, not to mention the fear of scaring off potential volunteers. We decided to continue with the form, and I check the registered sex offenders list in the state. Not a perfect solution, but the best we could agree on. < ="Content-" content="text/; charset=utf-8">< name="ProgId" content="Word.">< name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 11">< name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 11"><> Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette, Inc. It makes me glad that right now we're not doing children's or youth theater, though we do sometimes have minors in a play or in the building during rehearsals. I guess we need to be more careful in the future.
