Topic: Getting to Auditions [as a kid/teenager] Posted: 8/13/08 at 8:39pm |
I know I'm not the best singer [above average, definitly, but not the best] but I will admit to being an amazing actress. I'm 15 years old and I've gotten several leads at school, camp, and acting school.
My parents, however, do not think I am talented and will never bring me to auditions off broadway or broadway [I live close to the city and several community theaters so I do not see why it is a problem].
Anyone know how I can convince my parents to bring me until I get my senior liscence in 2 years? |

Is it that your parents don't think you're talented or that they don't want you to be disapointed. There is a universe of difference between HS, camp, CT and Broadway. In baseball terms it's like the difference between playing on a team in the Babe Ruth League and playing for the Boston Red Sox (sorry I know you're in NY, couldn't bring myself to that comparison).
Very, very few players can hit a 95 mile an hour fast ball. The question is can you?
Were I your parents I'd let you audition no matter how talented or untalented you might be. The chance of being cast is slim and disapointment & failure is the usual outcome. You would learn very quickly whether you're tough enough to handle it. Good luck!

I know its very different, but since I've never tried, I don't know where I'd land in CT and broadway. I live for theater, I've been doing it since I was 6. I'd settle for chorus. They've told me I'm not talented enough for broadway and CT so I should just focus on a real career and school.

Altos, I'm in the Hudson Valley - and I can tell you there's plenty of theatres around who would welcome you, including youth theatre. If you're willing to take chorus, get your foot in the door, as they say... And don't ever let ANYONE tell you you're "not good enough"!!!!!

The problem is GETTING to the auditions.
I think I'm getting to a community theater one Saturday night with my friend... but usually its a problem.
I live in Rockland County so there are alot of theater's between 5 and 30 minutes away... in Westchester, Nyack, ect.

Bedford (in Westchester) is auditioning for THE KING & I. I got the notice, but since I'm currently rehearsing PIPPIN in Monroe (Orange) & will then be directing GODSPELL (Dutchess), it breaks my heart to have to skip. I adore that show - & as Anna, I can costume myself out of my own closet!
Here's the information:
Auditions: For adults and teens: Sunday, September 7th 4 to 9 pm
For children aged 8 and above: Tuesday, September 9th 4 pm to completion Adults and teens welcome after 6 pm Callbacks (if needed): Thursday, September 11th 7 pm Come prepared to sing music of your choice (at least 16 bars). Accompanist provided (please bring sheet music for accompaniment). Come dressed to move for brief choreography audition. |

Thank you so much! The King and I is also one of my favorite shows, and if you know the information for Godspell [if teens can audtion for it], that would also be greatly apprectiated since it is one of my favorite shows.
Thank you!!!

One question: If they won't take you to auditions, how do you intend to get to rehearsals? You may be the most talented young lady around but without reliable transportation, you do the theatre no good. Is it fair to tease the theatre with your talent at auditions only to let them down when you don't have a ride? OK that was two questions.

I know my parents, and if I got a part they'd drive me. I used to take acting lessons half an hour away and they'd drive me 3 times a week to rehearsals and lessons. They say they wont take me to auditions because I wont get a part and it's a waste of time.
