bullet Topic: Plays with young female lead? and "Dream Girl"
    Posted: 4/12/08 at 2:31am
I've got an incredibly gifted and extremely versatile 20-year-old actress. I'd really like to showcase her in a leading role. Any suggestions? Preferably a comedy because of our fickle audiences, but let me know regardless of the genre.

And while I'm asking...has anyone directed or seen Elmer Rice's "Dream Girl" performed? I haven't gotten the script yet, but I like the story.

I have not seen this play done in years, but for some reason it jumped to mind.
"Butterflies are Free"
If she sings...The Fantasticks. (I think its an anniversary year)

ANY Tennessee Williams play - he always has great female characters.
A Doll's House by Ibsen.
The Belle of Amherst by Luce
Bronte by Luce
(both Belle and Bronte are terrific plays to get school field trip bookings!)
I have also seen Plaza Suite performed with the same man and woman in all the roles - very effective to show off versatility!
Daphne in Cottage D by Levi
Souvenir by Temperley  (a fabulous one-woman comedy with music)

IMO "Butterflies Are Free" was cute - however, it's very dated. The promiscuity that was considered so hip and with-it at the time of its writing, now sounds like an invitation to contract AIDS. IMO only!

Take a look at Neil Simon's " I Ought to be in Pictures".  The lead character - LIbby  ( which won Dinah Manoff a Tony) is almost 20.   Great part!
It's funny, but also very moving.

"I Remember Mama" immediately comes to mind as does "The Heidi Chronicles - Wendy Wasserstein (I think that's spelt wrong).  We just finished "Wait Until Dark" - lead is a great part for a young actress and would really stretch her.

How about "Doubt"?
Or  Musicals ..."Once upon a Mattress" is fun.

I saw a musical version of "uncle Vanya" that was really great once. It was in Humboldt CA.  I don't know who wrote it but I think it was a college project.  But it was remarkable.

This is a drama, but it has a challenging role for a young female: Proof

It is current and the play is so much better than the movie...... much better.

I would recommend Meet Me in St. Louis

We had a fantastic young actress play the role of Esther...great songs.
The Boy Next Door, The Trolly Song, Have yourself a merry little Christmas.

Good Luck!
