Tangoing With Tornadoes
This gorgeously written choreopoem uses poetry, live music and interpretive dance to untangle the secret web of how domestic violence affects women, particularly women of color. Its script explodes with fall-in-the-aisle humor as well as emotions that are both painful and beautiful. And it leaves audiences feeling empowered and decidedly hopeful. This is its third time on the stage - back by popular demand. Don't miss it!
WHEN: Jan. 18-27, 2008, 7 p.m.- Fridays, Saturdays / 3 p.m. Sundays VENUE: Self-Enhancement Inc., 3920 N. Kerby Ave., Portland, Oregon
ADMISSION: Free, but RSVP to guarantee seats: 503-249-17211 x259 or christyh@selfennhancement.org About the playwright/director:
S. Renee Mitchell, a spoken word recording artist, motivational speaker and MBA-educated entrepreneur, is the playwright, co-producer and the featured actress in the choreopoem. Last year, she was chosen as one of Womens eNews’ 21 Leaders of the 21st Century for her extensive work advocating for survivors of domestic violence. In her day job, Renee writes an award-winning columnist for The Oregonian. She silently suffered from psychological abuse for several years. Now she intends to spend her life educating other women about it and then helping them heal from it.

Tangoing with Tornadoes is the most stylistic and memorable piece of theatre on the subject of domestic violence I have ever witnessed. A combination of movement and powerful dialogue are brilliantly rhythmical. I can’t image an audience member who hasn’t hummed a rhythm or recited a line since viewing this powerful piece of theatre. Annette Klinefelter, Executive Director Girls Incorporated of NW Oregon
I was at your play on Friday night and let me just tell you it was so incredible. The passion from the very beginning was simply breathtaking I had the pleasure of seeing your show this weekend at SEI. I enjoyed it very much - the writing, the depth of the performances, the humor, the incredible vocals, Habiba's always gripping presence, and even the response of the audience members around me (much louder and interactive than much of who I see theater with!)
