Topic: The News on Newsies Posted: 8/15/07 at 4:06pm |
ive seen many theaters and schools do their own adaptation of Newsies, tempting the Dinsey Gods... was wondering how people get away with it.
I knew MTI was working on a version before High School Musical, and now the 2 people I talked with there have no knowledge of it. If not actual newsies, is there a knock-off? Kind of like... Back to the Future had "Time and Time again" and Indiana Jones had "Hurricane smith" Ive heard of comm theaters and school doing their own versions, with the music from the film, but it scares me to do so without rights (because you cant pay royalties if it doesnt exist). Want to avoid a lawsuit, obviously. And suggestions appreciated. |

I think you have answered your own question.
If the rights holders don't know & you can't get a licence to perform, you would need to be scared. Schools especialy dance, talent & cliostered less informed others. Not those that who are members of theatre frums of course, tend to do this believing they are exempt in some way? Just peforming to recorded music requires permission & atracts a fee. |

I have been waiting for "Newsies" from MTI as well. I enquired via email, and I got no reply ... Did you get the impression that they have stopped work on it, or do you think that the people you talked to were just uninformed? I am just wondering if it is worth pursuing further with MTI.

No, No No... don't do a show without securing the rights. Don't do a knock-off version of "Newsies". Wait until Menken is done with the project. I managed a theatre where one of his shows played. He's good guy. You're not screwing Disney, you're screwing Alan. Wait until he has a finished project and do it right! I'm sure it would be much better anyway.
